When approaching an SEO copywriter make sure you know the following:
1. Previous work - has he/she provided you with any samples? Published work (online) would be even better!
2. Have you spoken to him/her on the phone about SEO and copywriting in general? How knowledgeable do they seem? Make sure you work with an SEO copywriter who knows what they are doing.
3. Avoid working with a non-native 'writer' if you want to achieve outstanding copy for your business website, although there always exceptions to the rule!
